Nothing says Spring like the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, the largest, world-class garden festival of its kind in the western United State. Now entering its 26th year with a bigger, better and greener approach that celebrates “Life in the California garden”, this annual festival will be held Wednesday through Sunday, March 23-27, 2011 at the San Mateo Event Center.

Twenty full-sized garden installations from top Bay Area designers (including the world-renown horticulture staff of Woodside’s Filoli Center) and seminars led by well-known experts (including HGTV personality Gary Gragg, syndicated columnist “The Dirt Diva” Annie Spiegleman, garden blogger Amy Stewart, author Rosalind Creasy, and award winning landscape architect Jeffrey Gordon Smith) will invite attendees of all ages to “Get Your Green On”, with a strong emphasis on forward-looking, environmentally friendly techniques that can be accomplished in urban, suburban and country gardens. Alice Waters who has achieved iconic status as a pioneer in promoting organic cuisine and gardening, will be featured at several Saturday events, including a lecture that will celebrate the 40th anniversary of her groundbreaking restaurant Chez Panisse in Berkeley and focus on the Local Foods movement.

“The Flower & Garden Show has evolved into a full celebration of the California lifestyle and how we connect to our landscape and environment,” explained Show Producer Kay Estey. “Because food has become so much a part of our identity, new this year will be both an expanded 5000 square foot Aesthetic Edible Garden by Star Apple Edible Gardens of Oakland with a special Sunset Magazine section and a wine tasting garden area created by the Livermore Valley Wine Growers Association. Sure to appeal to local foodies will be daily cooking demonstrations by several Bay Area celebrity chefs – including Esquire Magazine’s 2010 Chef of the Year Sean Baker of Gather Restaurant, Francophile favorite Roland Passot of La Folie, the very hot Jeffrey Stout of Alexander’s Steakhouse, and the ever popular Andrea Froncillo of the Stinking Rose Group – that will incorporate discussions with designers on How to Grow a Chef Worthy Garden.”

While experienced garden aficionados will be more than excited by the scores of seminars and book signings by top experts on a range of topics – flower arranging, design trends, water conservation, lawn alternatives and cutting edge growing walls – the festival is designed to be equally accessible to interested newcomers and area visitors seeking a unique outing. A Marketplace with over 200 vendors selling plants, seeds, tools and fabulous gift items, a special Children’s Garden called Sproutopia with fun-filled, hands-on learning opportunities, a Farmer’s Market with flowers and produce, and spectacular art installations are among the several draws that delight attendees from all over the Western U.S. and make this an annual activity for savvy Bay Area denizens and their families. Popular sections are sure to include those created by the California Garden Clubs, the Bonsai Society of San Francisco, and the Western Horticultural Society- whose horticulturists will be available to discuss both new and rare plants, as well as old favorites that have been bought back into cultivation.

“We’re also excited that nationally acclaimed filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia will show three short films fromher upcoming, documentary project “Symphony of the Soil” which examines the state of community based and scientific growing practices all over the world, with an emphasis on successful, environmentally sound options, “said Estey. “It will be the first general public showing in the Bay Area and the segments on dry farming in Napa, community gardens in England, and a successful biodynamic community in the third world should appeal not only to gardeners, but to anyone interested in both the technical aspects of this complex topic as well as sustainable green living practices.”
The 26th Annual San Francisco Flower & Garden Show is held at the San Mateo Event Center, 1346 Saratoga Drive in San Mateo, only a 25 minute drive from San Francisco and just one block from the Hillsdale Caltrain Station (Note: BART riders can easily connect to Caltrain at the Millbrae BART Station). Parking is available at a cost of $10 for the entire day.
Show hours are Wednesday, March 23rd to Saturday, March 26 from 10am to 7pm and Sunday, March 27 from10am to 6pm. Admission includes all regular seminars and demonstrations. For Advance Online Ticket Sales, General Show Information and a Calendar of seminars, chef demonstrations and film showings, visit www.sfgardenshow.com

Since 2003, the Bay Area’s pioneering native garden tour has showcased gardens featuring California native plants. This community-based tour is free of charge to the public upon successful registration. Click here for more information.

Each year the tour features about 45 gardens, most of them private home gardens, which are open for viewing by the public in a self-guided tour format. Again it’s free but you have to register in order to be giving the garden addresses.

The goals of the tour are to demonstrate reduced water use, reduced chemical and pesticide use, improved habitat, and the unique aesthetic appeal of gardens designed with California native plants.

In spring 2010, a Julie Orr Design Express Garden was on the tour Sunday, April 18th. It is called the College Park Garden and is located in San Jose.

The reason I am so proud to share this garden with the public is because it is the perfect example of how sustainable landscaping can be accomplished affordably with Do-It-Yourself clients, when you work as a team with professional landscape designer.

My clients were receptive to many sustainable suggestions including: turf rebate programs, lawn removal, water-wise irrigation, flagstone installation, planting natives and storm water management. As part of my Express Garden service, I designed the garden plans and supplied them with materials information and tips for doing their own installation. They hosted a planting party where I gave a demo about how to plant a Cal native and then treated their friends and neighbors to a nice BBQ lunch once all the plants were in the ground.

Here are the before images with the lawn and non-native Agapanthus.

The Craftsman home said goodbye to its water-thirsty lawn and concrete hardscape, and now features a dry creek bed that drains rainwater away from the house, marked by a rock fountain surrounded by California gray rush. The old concrete path was resurrected as decorative urbanite walls for native bunch grasses, Pacific iris, evergreen huckleberry and woodland strawberry. Shrubs include coffeeberry and manzanita. Island alum root fills a large window box. A natural rock fountain and metal “cat-tails” birdfeeders encourage birds to visit the garden often.

Here’s what it looked like after we sheet mulched the lawn.

For pennies on the dollar, these smart and handy home-owners turned a dull monoculture front yard into a diverse garden full of life.

The CLCA-SFBA (San Francisco Bay Area California Landscape Contractors Association) Education Committee is comprised of a group of professionals (designers, contractors and suppliers) and students who share an interest in sustainable landscaping. Our Committee Chairperson is CLCA’s Board Member Nate Crosby, of Crosby Yard Services.

We meet monthly to discuss, review and arrange various educational events for the year. Our committee then breaks into subcommittees of volunteers that work on the tasks needed to bring these events into our community.

Why do our members get involved? Terry Lyngso, from Lyngso Garden Materials shares, “I have been a member of CLCA for a long time and found early on that joining a committee is the best way to get to know people in the chapter and to feel a part of the organization. I joined the CLCA Education Committee 3 years ago because I was interested in learning more about the sustainable aspects of our industry. I think this committee is working very hard to stay abreast of the changes in the industry and to bring these changes to the larger group in a way that very quickly puts ‘theory into practice’.”

In the last three years, the committee has created a basic workshop on the soil food web, a water conservation workshop and coming this spring on May 15th, a workshop focusing on grey water. Planning is in the works for June CPR/First Aid Training for landscape workers. For more information, watch for Evite reminders and/or contact Nate Crosby at crosbyyardservices@gmail.com.

In addition to these workshops, we also host a myriad of Sustainable Landscaping Brown Bag Lunches, where we can meet together during a lunch hour and share ideas based on a given topic or learn about new products or services from industry professionals.

What is the key to our success? Community support and local involvement have helped us continue our educational goals.

“The entire organization is interested in sustainability and education. With solid backing from CLCA, APLD, Foothill and De Anza Colleges, our efforts have been successful as evidenced by the attendance at our seminars/workshops and at our Sustainable Brown Bag Lunches,” says Heidi Johnson, Landscape Designer.

We are always looking for new volunteers and committee members. For more information on ways to get involved in the CLCA-SFBA Education Committee, please come to a meeting or contact Deva Luna at EarthCare Landscaping: 408-871-2792, Deva@earthcareland.com.
